Sharon has been a volunteer in schools and now volunteers for Alpha Kenya, as our Office Administrator.
Alpha as a tool is one of the great ways of fulfilling the great commission. You don't need to be an accomplished speaker or a member of the clergy to be part of an Alpha team. The beauty of Alpha is that it gives everyone an opportunity to participate. Your role might be to help with serving snacks or to prepare the meeting place – yet you would still feel as much part of God’s purpose as the one giving the talks or facilitating discussion in the small groups.
The great commission is to go out into the world and reach the lost. Withholding our participation in reaching out simply licenses the devil to frustrate the great commission. Incidentally, many of us who know the Lord lack the compassion that would propel us out from our comfort zones into the harvest field. Instead we get busy with our careers and education, assuming that someone else will do it. However, it should be clear to us that we are still responsible for the lost. Our mandate is to rescue those who are perishing, through evangelism and discipleship by God’s Word.
Edmund Burke once said: "All that is essential for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." We must be aware that by saying nothing, we have already spoken volumes. I thank God that He gave me the opportunity to serve Him through Alpha – something that I have done for the last three years. It has been a great joy conducting Alpha Team Training around the country and running the Alphas. For anyone out there wondering how they can be involved in the great commission, my answer to you would be, contact the Alpha office near you.
