My name is Emily Tata, I am 24 years old and I have 3 children. Before I joined Alpha, I used to be a street girl (gang of Chokoras). I used to go to the street to look for clothes, food and shelter. My children and I were sleeping in the streets of Nairobi slum (Soweto), where there was no security and our lives were very difficult and dangerous.
My mother had also been a street girl and this was the only life I knew. At the age of 14, I was raped, conceived and gave birth to my first child, a son. I had heard about Jesus but did not know his goodness in the lives of Christians. I was very confused; I didn’t know that Jesus had the power to change lives. Having met Alpha people before, one day 4 years ago I decided to try Alpha. Through people's testimonies, I experienced the power of God for myself and found out about the Bible. I then went on to share this experience with some of my friends from the gang, whose lives were similar to mine.
With the support of a sponsor gained through the Alpha office, I opened a restaurant, where I worked with several of my friends from the gang. I was finally able to support my family's basic needs. I now run a beauty salon, which also sells beauty products.
I have run Alpha for young mothers, older women and men from the gang. Currently I am also involved with two Alphas in 2 primary schools, 4 secondary schools and a number of small groups in the community I grew up in. I’m now sleeping in a good house where there is security and peace of mind. My children are safe, in good health and are in school. With some support from a kind sponsor and the little that I earn, I am able to ensure that my children go to school and that my mother's basic needs are taken care of.
